Blog Post 1- Inspired Artist
For my inspired artist project, I chose the artist Kang Dong Hyun. He is a Korean artist that makes hollow animal structures from metal branches. His most common works include his sculptures of a house cat, birds, bulls and elephants. The metal that he uses, is made to look like tree branches and twigs. All of his sculptures are 3-D, and he works in South Korea. He does not have his own website, but all of his work cn be found on his instagram, @donghyun_kang. I found this work inspiring because it is so intricate and detailed. I can tell that he spent a long time on this artwork, and the final product really shows this. Its inspiring to me because it shows that if you put your mind to something and you really want to create something, that you totally could do it. The artwork really drew my eye, because it was not all the common animals you usually see in artwork, like cats and dogs.

The most helpful warm up to me was the pen cubes. This warm up really helped me later in the project when I was creating my pen drawing. I knew which techniques to use where on my pen drawing of my soccer ball. I used random lines and hatching, and I would not have know what those were or how to use them if it was not for this warm up. Composition is the placement of different parts of the work of art to be visually appealing to the viewer and the artist. Value is the amount of lightness or darkness of a color. It helps the artist create contrast and make the art piece look 3D. The pros of using pencil for a piece is that it is easy to create values and contrast but a con is that it was a bit hard for me to get the shading smooth enough to look like the material that my soccer cleat is made out of. A pro of using pen is that there is so many techniques that the artist can use to add to the artwork and make it look really good, but a con is that you are not really able to add as much value as you are able to in pencil drawings, and that it is hard to fix a mistake since it it in pen. A pro about using charcoal is that you are able to get the background really smooth and I personally think it looks really cool, but a con is that it is extremely messy and it is really easy to get fingerprints on the sides.

1. From these different warm up activities, I learned a variety of things that helped me in my final product of my painting. I learned how to blend paints, create textures, how to make a smooth gradient scale, what paints to use for skin tones and browns, as well as mixing black and white into the color. The most helpful warm up for my paining was the warm up where we had to match the colors of the paints to the colors of the paint cards. This was the most helpful because the picture I used had a lot of interesting colors that I had to end up making. I learned the most from the warm up where we used the paint to create textures. It was very hard, but it was something that I did not know how to do before that warm up. I did not end up needing those skills I learned from that in my final painting though. You can make browns by adding specific colors together. Adding pink and green, yellow and purple or blue and yellow together make brown. Complementary colors together always make brown. To tone down a color, all you have to do is add the lighter or darker version of that color to the original to get the final product that you need.

Painting Final Project-
For my final project, I chose to paint a picture from a camp that I go to every year. It has a beautiful pink sunset in it with trees in the background and a house in the front. The sunset has pink clouds that fade into blue in the sky as the sun sets. The house looks like a beach house, with a long balcony on the front that stretches all along the front. I have three in progress pictures below, the first sketch, then how I was planning to paint the trees, and then me painting the house. The last picture is the final product. There i a lot of texture that I tried to use in my painting. There is texture in the grass in the front, as well as the trees in the back with the many branches in each tree. There is proportion in my painting, with the size of the clouds in the sky as well as the house in the front compared to the trees in the back. I decided to paint this because the camp it is from really means a lot to me, and I love remembering it. I feel like I was successful with the grass in the front, and making it have texture that you can see. Something that I could have done better is that the clouds are not as blended in the background as well as I would have liked them to be.

Portrait Drawing Unit-
For this project, we had to first do a bunch of warm ups that would end up helping us in our final project. The final project was that we had to sketch a portrait of someone based on a picture. I chose a picture of myself that I had took and then tried to draw me. I only used a pencil and a cotton swap to try and blend some things but those were the only materials. In my drawing, there is a lot of negative space, since I did not shade in my whole drawing. Each part of the face had to be proportioned right, or the drawing would not look like an actual face. Nothing could be too big or too small. I chose to draw myself, because I had never done it before and I wanted to try. The main thing I find successful about my piece is that it does kinda look like me, as well as the eyes look realistic and are almost the same. Something I learned from this is how shading and lines make a huge difference in a drawing.

Warm ups-
For these warm ups, we had to pick a object that was just around us and photograph it three different ways. I chose my computer since it is always with me when I am doing school stuff. I tried to make the photographs interesting by editing them and taking the pictures at different angles.

Final Project-
My pieces of photography each show how this time feels to me. The first picture shows the empty shelves that are occurring at most grocery stores and there is also no people in the picture because of the quarantine. The next picture shows a sign on the ground that shows that new procedures have been put in place to help practice social distancing, and keep people away from others. The last picture shows a lawn chair that has been used a lot during this time. Lots of people have been trying to be outside more since we are not really allowed to leave our houses. One aspect of color in each of these is that I tried to keep the colors very neutral and monochromatic with black. I did this because these times feel very dull. In each of the photographs, there is balance between the dark, shadowy parts of the pictures and the light, whiter parts of each picture. It makes the picture dull, yet still able to see and interpret. The thing that inspired me for these pictures is what has been going on in life from the past couple of weeks. I think my pictures show that while these times are hard, there is things we can do to control it and make life as good as it an be. I think my most successful piece is the first picture, because the editing is really good and it looks nice. From this assignment, I learned the different rules for when you take a photograph and how to make it aesthetically pleasing.
